Provincial Student Assessment Program

The ministry manages an assessment program that systematically gathers information from a variety of sources to determine the extent to which BC students are achieving the knowledge, skills and understanding prescribed in the provincial curriculum.

BC students participate annually in assessments that report their performance in a number of subject areas. These assessments:

BC students participate in four types of assessments:

The Foundation Skills Assessment (FSA) is administered annually to all BC students in grades 4, 7 and 10. It tests student ability in Reading Comprehension, Writing and Numeracy.

Provincial Learning Assessments are administered to students in grades 4, 7 and 10 on a sample basis, as needed. It covers the subjects or cross-curricular areas not covered by FSA.

Grade 10 Provincial Exams Students in Grade 10 are required to write Provinical Exams in Science, English and Math.

National and International Assessments test a variety of subject areas. Samples of BC students in various age ranges write these tests which compare student achievement relative to other provinces and countries.

Grade 12 Provincial Examinations certify the performance of BC students graduating from Grade 12. Writing grade 12 provincial exams is part of the graduation requirements.

Copies of past Exams and Keys are provided on-line for the non-profit use by teachers, administrators and students in the British Columbia educational system of schools.
