Our special education department provides services to students with unique learning needs from kindergarten through Grade 12. Development of an Individual Learning Plan (IEP) will address specific adaptations, modifications and a variety of supports which are required to ensure each student’s achievement of their personal potential. Services include screening and assessment, as well as referrals to other professionals who may support the student’s program.
If your child may be eligible for a Ministry of Education special needs designation, the first step is to participate in an initial interview carried out by our special education teacher, who will explain our program and gather information about the student’s needs. Our special education teacher will request copies of special needs documentation as required: the latest IEP; the most recent reports from therapists such as OT, PT,Speech; and any medical documentation about the student's diagnosis (e.g.,autism or cerebral palsy).
Following the initial intake interview, and determination regarding eligibility for a Ministry of Education special needs designation, decisions can be made regarding service delivery related to the student’s IEP. Please note that all service providers must be approved through the Mission Public Schools Student Services department.
A variety of adapted courses are also available to support students at the secondary level with learning disabilities, and we are pleased to note that these courses have an excellent success rate in preparing Grade 10 students for required provincial exams.
Educational Assistant support is available for student tutorials on-site at Summit, and may also be arranged to provide assistance as needed at ArtSmarts events and activities.
Our special education programs are as unique as our students. Contact us to find out how we can best support your child!
